St Ives' new Lifeboat is launched!
"On Saturday 14th November crowds lined the harbour in St Ives to welcome the town's new lifeboat "Nora Stachura". The £2.1m craft is the first Shannon class lifeboat to go into service in Cornwall.
The lifeboat crew, led by St Ives Coxswain Rob Cocking, demonstrated the lifeboat's capabilities just outside the harbour tohundreds of excited spectators. The new Shannon Launch and Recovery System (SLARS) was brought on to the beach to recover the lifeboat from the water and bring her into the boathouse for the first time.
The cost of the £2.1million lifeboat was generously bequeathed to the RNLI by long-time RNLI supporter Nora Stachura.
The Shannon class is the first of the RNLI's all-weather lifeboats to be powered by water-jets rather than traditional propellers, making it the most agile and manoeuvrable lifeboat in the charity's fleet. Water-jets allow the vessel to operate in shallow waters and be intentionally beached. And when precision really matters, such as operating alongside a stricken vessel or navigating around hazards, they'll come into their own.
Capable of 25 knots, the new lifeboat is 50% faster than Princess Royal, the all-weather lifeboat she will replace. As the lifeboat powers through the waves at higher speeds, new shock absorbing seats will significantly reduce the impact of the loadings on the crew.
