Porthmeor Beach

  • Porthmeor Beach is on the wilder, windswept North side of St Ives with Mans Head and The Island promontories offering some protection on the West and East ends of the beach. There is nothing between the beach and America;hence it is one of the best surf breaks in the UK.The beach is also famous for the Tate Gallery which sits majestically above the beach on the site of the old gas works.Porthmeor beach is very popular with families, many of which set up their windbreaks every day for the duration of their holiday. As the beach is only a a couple of minute's stroll along the Digey to Fore Street,it makes a very convenient base with the quaint shopping streets ideal for buying souvenirs, beach gear and pasties!Otherwise the laid back cafes on the beach offer welcome refreshments.
